Bone Setter (Hadjodi) Plants


1. Cissus quadrangularis

Plant Parts: Entire stem

Hadjodi (Cissus quadrangularis) is an ancient plant commonly used in India. It is commonly known as Haadjodaa, Bone setter, Haadsaankal, Hadjoda, Mangarballee, Sunduballi, Piranta, Kaandvel, Haadabhanga gachha, Hadajoda, Asthisamhrt, and Vajravalli. It is famous for its fracture healing properties due to various antioxidants such as phenols, tannins, carotenoids, and Vitamin C present in it. As per Ayurveda, consuming Hadjodi juice along with cow ghee or a cup of milk helps in healing bone fractures due to its Sandhaniya (promoting the union of fractured parts) property. It helps in managing weight by improving the metabolism of the body. It also prevents fats and lipid accumulation in the body and lowers the level of triglycerides which further helps in managing obesity. Hadjodi helps in wound healing due to its astringent and wound healing properties. Applying Hadjodi paste on the wound helps in reducing pain and inflammation due to its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties.

2. Argemone mexicana

Argemone mexicana, also known as prickly poppy, has various traditional medicinal uses, traditional practice to support its use in bone setting or fracture treatment.

 


Plant part: Stem and leaves  

It has traditional uses for various ailments, including some related to bone and joint health. Traditional bone setting practices often involve relocating the bone, stabilizing it with a splint or cast, and allowing the body's natural healing process to occur.

 

4. Holarrhena antidysentrica

Plant part: Dried bark

It is a plant used in traditional medicine for various purposes, including bone healing. While not a primary treatment for bone setting, its bark is used in some traditional practices for bone fracture healing, particularly in polyherbal formulations.

 

5. Cryptolepis buchanani

Plant part: Root, Stem and leaves

The plant locally in Arunachal Pradesh is known as Ganglong and used traditionally for the treatment of bone fracture. Sometimes, it is also found as creeper on ground. Traditionally, the plant, mainly, its root, stem, and leaves are used for the treatment of bone fracture by tribal people in Arunachal Pradesh.


6. Bambusa arundinacea

Plant part: Stem and leaves

Bambusa arundinacea (family Poaceae), commonly known as bamboo, causes decrease inflammation thereby helping in fracture healing. It has benzoic acid, traces of cyanogenic glycoside, and silicon substances which help in fracture healing. It also has calcium phosphorus and zinc. Oral or topical application of paste of stem or leaves is used in fracture healing.

 

7. Symphytum officinale

Plant part: Whole plant

Symphytum officinale (knit bone, family Boraginaceae) removes the inflammation surrounding the fracture. It induces the union of affected part and contains allantoin, a crystallize substance, used in orthodox medicine to encourage epithelial formation in ulcer and wound.


8. Salvia miltiorrhiza

Plant part: Whole plant

Salvia miltiorrhiza (Dan Sheng, family Lamiaceae) causes the early formation of dense callus, and microscopic examination has also revealed the increased activity of osteoblast. Dan sheng could improve mandibular bone fracture.

 

9. Terminalia arjuna

Plant part: Bark

Terminalia arjuna (family Combretaceae) contains tannins, arjunic acid, arjunantin, calcium carbonate, and sodium chloride. The bark has hemostatic properties. Powder of bark is used orally for bone fracture treatment.

 


10. Ehretia cymosa

Plant part: Whole plant

Ehretia cymosa (family Boraginaceae) is used to cover fractured area or for joint dislocation, the healing is accelerated as compared to no treatment.

 

11. Griffonia simplicifolia

Plant part:  Roots and leaves

Griffonia simplicifolia (family Leguminosae) roots and leaves are used to treat bone fracture. It is also used in congestion, sedative and for appetite suppressant for the weight loss.

 


12. Senna occidentalis

Plant part:  Stem and leaves

Senna occidentalis (family Fabaceae) is the plant used for healing of bone fracture.

 


13. Tinospora cordifolia

Plant part:  Stem

Tinospora cordifolia (Gulvel, guduchi, giloy, family Menispermaceae) stem paste is used as a bandage for the treatment of bone fracture and dislocation of bone.

 


14. Cannabis sativa

Plant part: Stem and leaves

Cannabis sativa, commonly known as Ganja, Bhang (Cannabaceae) – A nonpsychotopic compound of cannabinoid cannabidiol (CBD) can help in healing of bone fracture and speed up the process. As per the study done on the rat at Israel, they found that CBD alone makes bone stronger. Researchers had previously discovered cannabinoid receptors within human bodies stimulated bone formation and inhibited bone loss. 

 


15. Acacia arabica

Plant parts: Bark and leaves

Acacia arabica, commonly known as Babool (family Mimosaceae) is used in fracture and muscle spasm like trismus. It is used in the treatment of inflammatory arthritis.
